How is Quenched and Tempered Steel Made?

Quenched and tempered steel is a high strength and abrasion resistant steel with high fabrication qualities and mechanical properties. To increase the hardness and strength of steel, it is subjected to processes such as quenching and tempering.
On the other hand, the process of quenching comprises heating of steel, which is followed by immediate cooling in water, oil, and forced air or inert gases such as nitrogen. With respect to various parameters such as heating temperature, cooling method, cooling speed, this process of quenching is monitored and controlled.
Steel will be subjected to tempering to attain greater toughness and ductility by decreasing hardness, after the completion of the steel quenching process to a required hardened state.
Heating the steel to below the critical point for a certain period of time is required to achieve tempering and it needs to be cooled in still air at a particular cooling rate.
Parameters such as heating temperature and time are dependent on hardness and mechanical properties of the steel desired. Steel becomes less ductile and more brittle after the tempering process, that too without compromising hardness. The steel becomes more harder and tougher, as a result of these two processes.

42CrMo is a Chinese standard chromium-molybdenum high strength steel with good hardenability and toughness. This steel usually adopts quenching after tempering as the heat treatment solution. After tempering, it has relatively high fatigue and impact resistance and no obvious temper brittleness.

42CrMo/4140 has good mechanical properties and machinability, mainly in the form of plate and round rod. In the processing industry, the 42CrMo plate for the mold processing production, the 42CrMo round rod for mechanical direct processing parts.

42CrMo bar and plate is mainly used for manufacturing important structural parts working under high load such as hydraulic shafts, transmission gear, supercharger gear, engine cylinder; Spring clip, oil drill pipe clamp first class parts. In the mold manufacturing industry, 42CrMo is also suitable for large and medium-sized plastic molds with certain strength and toughness.

The corresponding material of 42CrMo steel as per the European Union, Japan, Germany and the United States standards respectively are: 42CrMo4, SCM440, 42CrMo4, 4140. 4140 Round Steel Rod is a Chromium-Molybdenum through-hardening steel rod of medium hardenability. It is a general purpose high-tensile steel with medium strength level and good impact properties.

Hardness is another key mechanical property of 4140 steel affected by temperature. Typical hardness of hot rolled 4140 round steel bar is about 28-32 HRC at room temperature. However, as the temperature increases, the hardness of the steel decreases. At 200°C the hardness drops to about 25-28 HRC and at 400°C to about 22-25 HRC. If by Induction hardened , 4140 round steel bar can be surface hardened to 58HRC.

AISI SAE 4140 alloy steel is a chromium molybdenum alloy steel specification widely used in general purpose high tensile steel for components, like axles, shafts, bolts, gears and hydraulic applications. Similar to alloy grade AISI 4130 chrome moly alloy steel but with a slightly higher carbon content. The higher carbon content of AISI 4140 steel gives greater strength and heat treatment capabilities in comparison to AISI / ASTM 4130 alloy steels, however it does have inferior weldability characteristics.

AISI 4140 Steel Grade Heat Treatment

  • Annealing
    Heat ASTM 4140 steels to 800 oC – 850 oC, hold until temperature is uniform throughout the section and cool in furnace.
  • Normalizing
    Heat steel alloy 4140 to 870 oC – 900 oC, hold until temperature is uniform throughout the section, soak for 10 – 15 minutes and cool in still air.
  • Tempering
    Re-heat 4140 grade steel to 550 oC – 700 oC as required, hold until temperature is uniform throughout the section, soak for 1 hour per 25 mm of section, and cool in still air.

Hydraulic piston rods are induction hardened in order to increase the resistance to damage from unanticipated external impact in applications where there is risk for such; examples are piston rods for hydraulic cylinders in excavators and loaders and for power-steering cylinders. An additional advantage afforded by induction hardening is improved resistance to inadvertent handling damage during cylinder manufacture.

Induction hardening of cylinder piston rods engenders not only a protection from damage in the event of external impact but also improves the mechanical properties of the rod and in particular, the resistance to buckling failure in push mode. This increase in buckling resistance can be accounted for by considering the rod as a composite material with a tube of hardened steel surrounding a solid core. Consequently, in relation to a non hardened rod with the same steel base, the diameter of an induction-hardened rod can be downsized leading to a number of benefits including but not restricted to reduced weight and lower costs.

Polished Chrome Plated Rods are produced from medium carbon cold-finished or hot rolled steel bars usually in 1045/1050 or 10v45 grades. The bars are centerless ground, polished, and chrome plated to a minimum thickness of 0.0005”, and 0.001” per side. Chrome Plated bars are specifically designed to be used for most piston rod applications in hydraulic cylinders.

Anyone who has worked with hydraulic cylinders is familiar with the general structure and function of this linear actuator, and most understand the importance of protecting the rod from damage which often requires hydraulic cylinder repair. Scoring, pitting, or nicks in the chrome surface will ruin seals and result in fluid leaking from the cylinder gland – a problem that will only worsen with each stroke of the cylinder. What many don’t realize, is that not all cylinder rods are created equal, and the difference lies just below the polished surface.

The polished surface is chrome plating. Chrome plating not only offers durable long-term protection against corrosion, but also provides a smooth finish that can be ground and polished to a precise diameter. This is critical to optimizing seal performance and providing enough clearance to allow lubrication between the rod and seal, but not outright leakage.

The chrome plating used for hydraulic cylinder rods is called “Hard Chrome”. It is dull silver / grey in color, and as the name suggests, has a hard surface. This is quite different from “Cosmetic Chrome” which is the bright and shiny finish found on cars and motorcycles. Cosmetic chrome is softer and more easily scratched and damaged.
Although Hard Chrome is more resistant to damage than Cosmetic Chrome, it cannot withstand impact on its own. If the base material is relatively soft, it will suffer damage with mild to moderate impact, and so will the chrome plating. However, if the base material is hardened steel, it will tolerate moderate impact and provide enough support to prevent damage to the chrome plating.

The two most common types of chrome shafting used to make hydraulic cylinder rods are CPO and IHCP. CPO stands for Chrome Plated Only, and IHCP stands for Induction Hardened & Chrome Plated.

1, surface hardness

Surface hardness is an important aspect to distinguish the quality of the hard chrome bar. Because the surface hardness of the product is not up to standard, it will directly shorten the service life of the product. So if you want to choose a good chrome bar, you must check its surface hardness.

2, surface roughness

The surface roughness of the hard chrome bar is not good, which will not only affect the service life of the product. In serious cases, it will also affect the plating quality, causing premature flaking or rusting of the plating layer. The hard chrome bar manufacturer will cause the product to lose its surface. Protective effect. Therefore, the surface roughness is also an aspect of distinguishing the chrome bar. In general, the proper range of the surface roughness of the chrome bar should be between Ra 0.2 and 0.4.

3, surface corrosion test

Because the induction hardened chrome rod has only high corrosion resistance, it can be used in places where oxidation is easy (such as water, chemicals, steam, sea water, etc.) to ensure its high performance. Therefore, generally good chrome bar need to pass the surface corrosion test, and the test generally reaches the salt spray test for 72 hours to reach level 9.

The piston rods are induction hardened with Q&T. After induction hardening with Q&T, the piston rods could not only obtain greater mechanical properties, but also achieve a greater resistance to damage from external impact.

Induction hardening with Q&T consists of a two-stage heat treatment process.

Stage 1, the piston rods are quenched and high-temperature tempered to adjust the mechanical properties of the steel.

Stage 2, the cylinder rods are induction hardened in order to increase the resistance to damage from external impact in applications where there is risk for them. The induction hardening process creates a very hard, wear resistant surface while maintaining the proper toughness in the majority of the cylinder rods.
